Fringeware Review

I was looking at an old copy of Fringeware Review from 1996 the other day. They had a catalog in the back pages with some software on floppy disk for $60. This made me wonder what good software might be out there from 95 - 98 era that may now be in public domain and furthermore might run flawlessly on Puppy Linux or (pick your version) under Wine or whatnot. Something to ponder anyway.

Puppy Linux still on top

Dragon Puppy Linux is still beating everything else I try. Lately I have burned and booted Vector Live 5.9 and Wolvix. Both Failing my tests. Most important is for sound to work in YouTube. This did not work in Dragon either upon first boot but I tinkered and using Seamonkey it works (props to seamonkey). Since I already have my saved dragon file on my Ubuntu pc I don’t feel like tinkering with these other distro’s that don’t work. Wolvix did look nice and had all the other apps I need already pre-loaded so others may be able to use it, I tried the Hunter edition. But as I said - for the moment Dragon Puppy Linux is my main Linux of the moment. I am never fully satisfied so I will probably burn and test more distro’s soon. Although, it may end up being other versions of Puppy. I just checked the Dr. Bill (The Computer Curmudgeon) website to see if he has tried or said anything about Puppy Linux yet. I had told him about it last year. Still looks like he’s staying away from it. Watched some rare Kiss footage on YouTube using Dragon Puppy Linux with Seamonkey tonight worked great! I like the mmorpg games - specifically the free ones you find all around now - games like Sword of the New World - too bad these don’t work in Linux - the fact that I cannot play these games in Linux and there is still no good - “ACID Type multitracker” for Linux - still keeps me chained to Microsoft. Glad XP still works - Vista sounds aweful.

Quick Post

Since this is a Dragon Linux spot - I have to mention Dragon Puppy Linux - I have been testing and using this distribution for a few days now and it is very impressive. The look and feel are amazing - boot is like lightning - and the built in software installer worked well, I had no sound on the youtube website under Firefox but I installed the Seamonkey browser and sound works fine in youtube while using seamonkey.

Mandriva One

Last night I downloaded Mandriva One spring 2007 Gnome and KDE versions. First of all, they both took way too long to download compared to other distro’s of the same size, about 700MB, I normally can get that in an hour or two, this went way longer, I finally went to bed. So, next day, (today), I burn my iso files so I can try Mandriva with Metisse Desktop, No - the will not boot on my old pc’s at all, finally my newest pc does load the Gnome one. I go to YouTube (one of my basic tests) Nope - can’t even install a plug in in Firefox - says it is unrecognized - so I go to my Anixas website to see if the Javascript feed works, Nope - same thing it has some kind of unknown plug in error and my only option is to click Finish. Sucks! To me these are basic features that should work for pc’s (at this point in history). I don’t care about license issues and what not all I know is javascript has to work and so does flash if you want to have a decent internet experience. I am not even whining about Windows Media files, Real Player files, or others. I didn’t even test these because if the basics don’t work who cares about the rest. Mandriva One You Suck a waste of a download and two perfectly good cdr’s - As for Puppy Linux I had some issues with a couple of the recent releases but I think those have been resolved. One of the releases told me to launch Xorgwizard , this worked. I would be nice if they all would tell you this , in case you don’t know about it. So , Puppy Rocks Mandriva Sucks.

Murga’s Mean Pup

First tonight, I got the Xandros desktop 4 DVD on the May 2007 issue of Linux Magazine. I have used Xandros before and really liked it so I had to install this to see how the latest one was. Awesome as usual - no problems at all - highly recommended distro. But now for my main focus. Puppy Linux - this is my latest obsession. I have been downloading all kinds of versions of Puppy Linux, so far, Puppy 2.16 is the only one that has given me any problems - after booting with 2.16 I had no GUI it would start to load X Windows and then just blank out and go back to the shell. Right now though, I am in Mean Pup - 1.0.5 Mozilla.iso - this one is nice - I like the different default orange color scheme and the desktop is sweet also. Even the boot screen had some nice colors and graphics to it. I was glad on this one that the video display tool came up right away - some of the versions don’t do that - it makes it really easy to switch immediately to my proper display settings. I did have to dig through the start menu to get my ethernet config tool - I prefer that to be right on the desktop for convenience to me. I like the default Mozilla web browser theme as well. I am a huge fan of Puppy Linux. I wrote a small tutorial on Puppy Linux 2.12 you can find it on www.anixas.com on my links page if you have any interest.
