If you are a gamer
If you are a gamer then I would say at this time that Linux may not be for you. There are Gamer editions of linux and 3rd party programs that supposedly will help you run Windows based games on Linux but I am not convinced that any of these are ready yet. And , even a simple game of Runescape may not be playable. That is my personal test. When I boot up a new install or a Live Linux CD , I go to www.runescape.com and see if I can log in and play. Most of the time I cannot.
I loaded Freespire tonight replacing PC BSD, why? because I could not get my Sound Card working in PC BSD I even changed out the card and still could not do it. Puppy Live CD was able to use the card and in Freespire it was also very easy to configure the card and get it working. So I loaded Freespire and so far everything is working good except for games. (Like I said). I am not a heavy gamer , I do many other things on my pc other than just play games , so it’s not that big of a deal if they don’t work. However, they do make a good test. I downloaded several pieces of software , one of them was Quake II. I clicked on the screen to play it and my screen went blank - that was all. So then I tried Maelstrom - this one worked but had no sound - even after adjusting the game volume settings. Third test was , of course, Runescape. I loaded my Web Browser, went to runescape.com - good so far - clicked a few buttons - got to the screen where the game applet starts loading - and Whammo! My whole Browser Disappears! So I guess i won’t be playing Runescape on here.
Other than the game aspect, so far everything else seems good. I do like the easy software installations provided by Click and Run and the interface is pretty slick.
